Karen Perisho - Teacher
Yoga entered my life as a teenager when my mom began practicing. Although I did not practice myself at that time, watching her commit to her practice and what it brought to her life, opened my awareness to yoga. I then began my own practice around the age of 21 and simply showed up to my mat for a good stretch, sweat or a little more cardio and strength training. I was purely seeking the physical aspects of yoga. However, the more I practiced, the more I learned how much more yoga had to offer me. I found myself craving that space, time, personal connection and breath. Rather than a place of exertion and effort, my mat quickly turned into a place of escape and peace...reconnecting myself with myself and giving me the access to all of the gifts that yoga has to offer.
When I first came across the information about Urban Lotus Project, I immediately said to myself "This is what I want to do "when I grow up"." Although I am 36 years old and have a well established career, this organization brings my two passions, working with at-risk youth and yoga, together. I simply couldn't wait to learn more about it and become a part of it. I have worked with at-risk youth in the educational setting for most of my 16 year career as a teacher, instructional coach and administrator. I am highly passionate about meeting kids where they are at and then working along side them as they work to build their own capacity in order to be whatever they dream they can be. Yoga worked its way into my life without me knowing how much I needed it and over the years I have come to realize how much it has changed, shaped and influenced my life...how much calm it brings me amidst the chaos of life. Based on my experience with both, I think it is an amazing way of life and a great set of tools to share with at-risk students.
My amazing husband and 2 incredible boys, 9 and 6, are the foundation of my world and I simply love just hanging out with them. We love spending time outside hiking, playing at the work, going to the lake, working in the yard, playing with our 4 chickens, dog and tortoise or hanging out with friends and family. My boys and I love music and you can often find us singing along to the newest country song or having an impromptu dance party in our living room.
Health and fitness are my passion...so if you can't find me on my yoga mat, out for a run or hike or at my gym, you can most likely find me in my kitchen. :)
I also spend a lot of my time on my day job...I have worked in the field of education for 16 years now as a teacher, instructional coach and administrator. Currently I work as an administrator in the Department of Professional Learning in the Washoe County School District. I love my job and work with amazing individuals who make me laugh, think, reflect, and grow each and every day.
My Mantra: "Balance is not something you find, it is something you create"
Also: “PEACE…its does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work…it means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.”
